Description
“Citrus greening” is a so far, incurable disease of citrus trees. It disturbs and block the uptake of nourishments of citrus trees, in the transport vessels (phloem) of the trees, resulting in smaller and sour fruits and damaged leaves.
“Citrus greening” is caused by a bacteria with these scientific names “ Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus”, (Las) and “Candidatus Liberibacter americanus” (Lam). This bacteria is carried by a plant lice (a psyllid) with the Latin name “Diaphorina citri”.
The psyllid feeds on the leaves of the citrus trees and infects the tree with these bacteria.
If you need help with detecting the psyllid “Diaphorina citri” we can send you pictures of the psyllid in the different stages of development, so you will be able to determine the plague by yourself.
Only recently (1998) the citrus greening or Huanglongbing is detected in the east coast of Florida. And spreading all over North America and ruining the citrus trees and destroying many lively hoods. So far as we know no cure is effective for citrus greening. In many states the only thing left to do was quarantine areas to slow the spread.
By coincident it was observed that citrus trees under oak trees did not get effected by the disease. Research done by the University of Florida (UF/UFAS) indicates that oak leaf extract is the only way to control “Citrus greening”. According to the university “Oak leaf extract” might be the only potential cure.
